University of Sheffield
The Electrical Machines & Drives Group undertakes research on most facets of electrical machines/actuators, drive systems, power electronic converters and motion control systems, for applications in all market sectors. In relation to the automotive sector, it is researching enabling technologies to facilitate cleaner and more efficient ICE vehicles as well as next-generation electric/hybrid vehicle power-trains. Current research projects include variable-valve-timing, integrated starter-alternator, electric-assist turbocharging, electrical torque-booster for down-sized ICE, free-piston energy converter, 36V VRLA battery module, supercapacitor peak power buffer, and optimal energy management via model predictive control.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is an impartial expert organization carrying out technical and techno-economical research and development work. The amount of staff is about 3000, and the annual turnover is over 200 M€. Research group Engines and vehicles (27 persons) seeks solutions for higher energy efficiency and lower environmental impact in road transportation. Our research activities cover the entire chain from fuels and engines to combustion and exhaust emissions. The main research facilities include modern road-simulation chassis dynamometers for both light and heavy-duty vehicles, several engine dynamometers (including one for transient testing), and up-to-date analysis equipment for measuring and characterizing both gaseous and particulate emissions.
